Faith and Fate

Mixed media mosaic on metal frame

The sculpture groups two opposing forces in the arms of six graceful women. Three women, the Fates of Greco-Roman tradition, spin, measure and cut the thread of life. Another three, adorned in Latin American-inspired milagros, pray for happiness in birth, daily living and the next life. The Fates' cold tasks demand respect and resign us to fear, though their counterparts' warmth asks for hope through prayer. The flat iron outlines force viewers, who never see more than three women at once, to believe faith and fate coexist. The viewers' effort to understand the piece mimics women's efforts across cultures who accept and challenge events seemingly forced upon them through present circumstances. Milagros and mythology are conduits for leveraging faith and handling fate, as art is a mechanism for approaching and wrestling with complex emotion. Folk amulets and spirit visages connect abstract belief to lived experience.
